Hey Chirag thanks for all the info. Just a small nitpick..the $139 model does come in Graphite
ReplyDeleteSorry I meant only in Graphite (There is no white version). Correction made.
ReplyDeleteHi Chirag wanted to know whether it would be a good idea to book the 3g+wifi version for india? Would that work? (Now that 3g is coming to India)
ReplyDeleteI think it is some what of a no-brainer. If you are on th emarket for an e-reader. Then the Kindles are the model to buy. BTW, you don't need 3g to use the 3G model. The Kindle 2 was also a 3G version and it works fine here.
ReplyDeleteGet it here
hey guys just tell me something.. If you guys seriously think u'd like to carry more than 1 book at a time. I like kindle n wish to buy one but confused between ipad n kindle.. Also moreover, i am not clear if i'll have access to newspapers online or wat kind of online resources is accessible in india for kindle users.
ReplyDeletePawan Bhojwani.
HI Chirag thx for every thing .. just tell me whether it is available in Kolkata , if yes then where and how much ,, any IDEA plzz !!!
ReplyDelete@SOM you should read this
ReplyDeleteand this
The correct link to buy is this one Though I prefer the WiFi only version
Pawan, it depends on your need. Kindle is a great reading device.iPad is a great all rounder. But it has some shortcomings as a reading device. Primarily it is heavy and too large to be held comfortably & it can't be used outside.
ReplyDeleteI believe a smaller iPad is in the offing. but it will still not address the reading outside issue.
iPad is great for general media consumption and has great support from the apple app economy.

ReplyDeletethanks for the reply Chirag, But frankly i am still not able to convince myself. its kinda difficult for me. im basically looking for readin but surely i wont use it only for reading. ipad offers great level of interaction. but is it easy enuf to carry it arnd in trains i guess no. kindle is convenient in tht sense wat wud u guys prefer .. public poll plz
ReplyDeleteBuy both. :)
ReplyDeleteTo SOM you wrote "I prefer the WiFi only version". Can u pl explain why? In another blog u said 3G is free. Wi-fi hotspots are not so common yet & most require password
ReplyDelete3G (actually GPRS) is free, but is also more expensive. I prefer Wifi, because more often than not, you will be using the internet features near home base (presumably with a Wifi hotspot tagged to an Internet connection). Not to mention, Wifi will be faster than GPRS that you would get in India. Unless you are a jetsetting individual (which I am not) you wouldn't need it.
ReplyDeleteAs to your other question follow this link.

Will give you an estimate of cost before you finally pull the trigger.
hi chirag,thats very informative...

can i read the books i already have downloaded from the forums
ReplyDelete@raevanth Yes. highly recommended. However, if you have A4 PDf's I suggest you get the Kindle DX
ReplyDeleteTo the other gent. Yes. you can read most books after conversion (see Calibre)
thanks fr the reply chirag
ReplyDeleteshud i go for the wifi model or 3G?
Hi Chirag,
ReplyDeleteI am thinking of getting a kindle and was wondering if there was any way to circumvent the customs (i read a rule somewhere that if the item is designated as a gift it is duty free, under 10000), can I avail this if so how, also will it be prudent to use a mail forwarder like MyUSA to circumvent duty?
@Raevanth, If you have a wiFi spot at home. then get the Wifi version. I doubt you will need it beyond that. after the first few weeks you will have far too many books than you would want.
ReplyDelete@Rohan, If you know someone who is coming back from the states, then get it through them. It is safer. I haven't used these other services and they always somehow seem to come out as more expensive.
Hi chirag
ReplyDeleteI was planning to get kindle but didn't know how to. I got a lot of information from your blog, Thanks. Can you clarify one more thing. Is it possible to transfer the books from my PC. I got a kindle for PC downloaded. In that case I can easily decide the wi-fi only model is sufficient.
Thank you
Yes, Yetindra, You can do that. Once you get books from Amazon (or other sources) you can transfer it over cable.
ReplyDeleteI have lot of scientific papers and text books in PDF format, can i transfer it to kindle and read it, with out any problem
ReplyDeleteCan we use a SD card to expand the memory in kindle. If so how much we can expand. A4 pdf's can't we read in Kindle, or we need kindle DX.
ReplyDeleteWhat about the WINK ereader
No, you can't use an SD card to expand the memory. you are pretty much stuck with what comes on board. But you do get a generous amount and it tends to be sufficient for most uses.
ReplyDeleteYou can put PDF's onto the kindle. But if the page size is A4, then the Kindle DX is recommended.
Please see updated posts on the topic
What about the WINK ereader vs kindle
ReplyDeleteGiven the current price of the ereader, the Kindle is a better deal. Not only cheaper, but also feature packed and a library to boot.
ReplyDeleteHi Chirag,
ReplyDeleteCan I use HDFC's Netsafe card (Debit Card) to buy books for Kindle? I already bought Kindle3 by using my friends credit card.
can you write an review about WINK
ReplyDeleteI don't have a Wink. The ones that I saw in person, were nowhere close to the release version.
ReplyDelete@Ravi,
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried it personally for this very purpose. But logically it should work. Let me know if it works for you.
Amazon keeps it as an Import Fee deposit. Depending on the category you fall in, you might get a refund. I got about $35 back out of the 90 odd (See the main post elsewhere on the blog. And if you found the post useful, buy using one of the links on this blog.
ReplyDeleteAsus has launched the ebook reader in india, if so what is the price
ReplyDeleteWhat about the new ereader LeAf reader introduced today
ReplyDeleteHi Chirag,
ReplyDeleteI have one question about the Kindle 3. Can we browse websites like Wikipedia and The Hindu etc in the new version, without any charge for internet.
If I am buying the Kindle 3 in USA and using it here. Will I be charged for using the internet in India (The whisper net they are talking about apart from Wifi)
Chaitu
Hi Chirag,
ReplyDeleteIm confused between kindle dx and kindle 3. which one would you prefer and why?

hi chirag i got a 3g version of kindle but i could not get it connecgted to my wifi at home( i have broadband connection wifi). it asks for ifp address . port etc which is all greek to me helppppppppppppp.
ReplyDeletehi Chirag,
ReplyDeletei have ordered the 6' wifi + 3G model. i just wanted to ask you if i can browse the web using the kindle browser for doing google searches and using wikipedia sometimes using 3G/GPRS.
Since the kindle allows to share passages directly to facebook/twitter can i access the same websites using the browser on 3G/GPRS
hey guys i have a kindle 3g+wifi version graphite with me... im leaving to us guys ... i want to sell it.. if anyone wants can mail me @ navyakrishna111@gmail.com .. i stay in hyderabad.
ReplyDelete@Chaitu, Yes you can. No you won't be.
ReplyDelete@Mallika I prefer the smaller Kindle. Because, well it is small. If I need a bigger one, I may as well get a tablet (Amazon is coming out with one of those as well).
@lifeofadoc You need to check if your WiFi router is set to DHCP. and set the Kindle to automatically acquire IP. Amazon also has excellent how to guides on their Kindle page.
@Anonymous. see answer above
Hi Chirag, pls let me know if it is possible to browse the net (i mean sites like google, yahoo etc) using the 3G model or the free 3G service is specific to some limited sites only?
ReplyDeleteBased on your reply I will order my kindle, i.e I will decide whether to go for the 3G or simple wi-fi model.I stay in bhubaneswar.
