Kindle Fire

My Kindle Fire has shipped and will reach a destination in the US. Unfortunately, I won't be able to get my hands on it till about the end of December.

Ah well.

New Year's gift I suppose.

So, a quick run down on the Kindle Fire. It comes with a 7" screen and priced at $ 199 (approx Rs. 10000). The tablet features the Andriod OS. Other notable tablets that feature this OS include Samsung Galaxy Tab, Motorola Xoom etc...

How to get it sitting here in India. Order from Amazon, and get it shipped to some you know and then they will ship it to you. or Or you ship it to an importer who will then ship it to you. Sites liek IndiaPlaza also source the Kindle for you.

  1. Hi Chirag,
I want to buy ebook reader to read some work related pdf files.
I am looking for e-ink technology and 8-9 inch screen.
    I stay in Mumbai.

1)which Reader is good for my requirement??
2)Can we convert pdf to "reader's format" easily without any charges? My profession require me to read lot of pdf files(not e-books) frequently.
3)How can I buy reader from Amazon as it says product can not be shipped to India address???
If this is true, Is there any way I can ask them to ship it to some virtual US address and ask some courior (like bluedart india) to pick up and ship it to India address OR is there any other easy solution ??

    Regards
    Sameer

    1. Sameer,

PDF's can be read as is on the Fire. They can even be rea don the classic Kindle (i.e. with the e-ink screen).

If you want the Fire you have two options. But from the link above and send it to someone you know in the US and they carry it back for you.

Or use a store and forward carrier like Borderlinx. They will create a US address for you. You can ship it to them. They will send you a price quote and take care of the paperwork and deliver it to your home in Mumbai.

  3. Hi chirag,

2)I am looking for 8/9 inch TOUCH screen Kindle. What I can see on Amazon is 6 inch kindle($80 aganist kindle fire $200). Can u please provide link to "8/9 inch TOUCH screen Kindle"

3)Can I use my HDFC credit card to buy Amazon product (and to pay to Borderlinx) to ship it to Borderlinx generated US address??

  4. Sameer,

e-ink is over rated. I have both the Fire and the regular Kindle. The only things going for the regular Kindle are the weight (or lack thereof), daylight reading and the fantastic battery life.

There is no 8/9" Kindle "Touch" available. Touch as a feature is only available at the 6" size.

The regular e-ink Kindles can be shipped directly to India. You can search this blog for a detailed step by step how to. (or ping me via chat on the top left).

You should be able to use your HDFC credit card on Amazon. (You don't need Borderlinx to buy the regular eink Kindles, only for the Kindle Fire).

If you only want to read PDF's, that too in daylight with great battery life, is a larger e-ink Kindle recommended.

Difficult for me to advise unless I know a specific use case,

I use both my Kindle and Kindle fire, interchangeably depending on who amongst my wife or I pick up what first. Within the home it doesn;t matter for reading books. But outside the home the e-ink Kindle really starts shining.

Happy to answer any queries you may have.

    1. Sameer,

I can recommend the Kindle DX.
It has a large screen size where you can read full size PDF's easily.
      It doesn't have touch (yet).

The Kindle fire is a small screen, it will be difficult to read larger size pdf's (as you will have to be scrolling around a lot.)

Recommend that you check out the Kindle DX (some videos onf Vimeo, Youtube etc.). Should serve you well. Killer battery life.
